Internal medicine is a field of medicine where doctors use their clinical judgment and scientific knowledge to identify and treat a wide range of illnesses and health issues in adults. Internists or general internists are medical professionals who specialize in internal medicine. Internists are distinct from general practitioners and family physicians, despite the fact that they are all primary care physicians and that the phrases are sometimes used synonymously. One of the main distinctions is that family practitioners treat both children and adults while internists only treat adults. In particular, general internists are qualified to provide primary care and monitor patients throughout adulthood. Others solely offer outpatient care. Some internists practice as hospitalists, providing primary care in hospital settings. Long-term care facilities and rehabilitation institutes are other settings where general internists may work. Unlike internists, general family practitioners also practice pediatrics, obstetrics, and minor surgery in addition to treating adults.
