Internal medicine is a field of medicine where doctors use their clinical judgment and scientific knowledge to identify and treat a wide range of illnesses and health issues in adults. Internists or general internists are medical professionals who specialize in internal medicine. Internal medicine residents provide care for hospitalized patients for at least a year, including at least three months in intensive/critical care units. Students receive at least a year of hospital-based training, as well as additional exposure to in-patient subspecialties like gastrointestinal, hematology-oncology, and cardiology. Several internal medicine specialists specialize in one area. After completing the compulsory three-year internal medicine residency, students pursue an additional one to three years of fellowship training to build experience in certain subspecialties. Doctors in internal medicine diagnose, treat, and manage a variety of ailments. They include cancer, infections, and ailments of the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, as well as the heart, blood, kidneys, joints, and the heart.
